Origination: dogs brought to Newfoundland from England, Europe, and Norway developed into the large heavy coated Newfoundland and the smaller shorter coated Black Water Dog, Lesser Newfoundland or the St. John's Dog. English sports and fishermen found them to be excellent retrievers of fish and game and brought some back to England. Further breeding with the Flat-coated Retriever, the Curly-Coated Retriever and the Tweed Water Spaniel created the present day Labrador Retriever.
